Articles zone : WHY DO WE IDOLIZE CELEBRITIES ?

The increasing celeb-mania characterized by natives of the 21st century brings one to this singular conclusion – “The world has gone insane and is now suffering from a low-level cultural depression”. Before you start seeing me as a bad mouthed lady, stop for a moment to think about this, and probably find a suitable answer as to why persons who kick against Racism and fight hard to see that everyone has equal rights have now turned around  elevating to a very irritating level another human just like them to a god-like status? Now I guess we’ve found a common ground.

Of course all humans are created with the longing for Entertainment. To entertain and to be entertained .But just how much do we allow entertainment affect us?
I have no objection to the fact that they keep us constantly entertained. Many of us digital natives cant stop downloading music videos, music, Nollywood movies, Hollywood movies, keeping up with reality T.V shows and engaging in all forms of entertainment. We like their voice, so we wanna sing just like they do, we adore their dance moves, so we  wanna dance just like them, we even go further craving their fame. With the increasing hunger for celeb-info, I dare to modify the old Economic cliché that the passionate hunger for celeb info these days is just as insatiable as human wants.

The media hype for celebrities only go further to increase this insatiable hunger. The lives of celebrities has become ubiquitous as their lives are constantly on display. The media’s never too far to get every knotty detail of the lives of celebrities plus many cannot go a day without reading the latest juicy morsel of celebrity gossips. Thanks to popular websites, blogs, and magazines, the public can get the latest news down to the very last detail to feed their celeb-frenzy.

Meanwhile, these ‘reputable’ celebrities rub off their satiric lifestyles on the media. We now live in a world where the weird, the crazy, the selfish and same sex relationships Rock!!. Its disturbing to see how ladies in an attempt to dress like Nicki Minaj or Beyonce expose their body parts, and sadly many fall in the net of the fashion police bloggers who are more than eager to create stories to those unsightly pictures. Its disturbing to see ladies fall and cry over male celebrities at street shows. Its disturbing to see young men of this generation name their Mentors as popular star artistes who engage in all forms of questionable behaviours. Behind the scenes, they marry, have children, have affairs, get divorced, engage in same sex relationships, abuse drugs, abuse women, womanize in some cases leak their sex tapes, or even get arrested. And u’ll ask a 15 year old boy: who is your role model? And he’ll enthusiastically say Wizkid or Justin Beiber. SMH! We no longer have to visit a psychiatric hospital to find unstable minds.

Emerging young men today, rather than following the path of admirable successful men, prefer to be the next superstar. What was considered unquestionably bad behavior 10-15 years ago has become the norm today, thanks to our ‘notable’ superstars. Now before y’all go ‘what?’ lol, am not a critic. But things like this has to be said.

And so One simple fact we have to realize is this, that they are among the rich and famous, that they are celebrated doesn’t make them less imperfect than we are. So now my question again,

  Why the craze over celebrities???
As a matter of fact, the answers are not far-fetched. One major reason is our backgrounds and exposure. The crazier celebrities get, the more they make shocking headlines, the more they are glorified by the tabloids, the more they become celebrity in our eyes. True or false? I hope to see your answers in the comment box.

A second reason, the overrated attention the media gives to them. Every blogger wants to feed its hungry fans the latest juicy morsels on popular celebrities, posing them to have an ideal lifestyle. And when we believe they’re living the dream life, we wannabe just like them!

A third reason, the fame. So many of us today resort to becoming wannabe’s. Social climbing to become the next cover for popular magazines. These ones start to belittle their lives and achievements, and in trying to chase seemingly golds, they throw away diamonds – the beautiful life they already got. Just like the fast becoming norm in the entertainment industry, they go to the extent where they create sex tapes. Just so they can be Famous.

And the very last reason? It's quite simple. To get away from thier personal problems. And then they indulge themselves in the lives of popular celebrities.
But its time we stopped for sec, from all the celeb frenzy, from all the gossips, from all the overrated views of celebrities in some god-like manner… and so, I’d like to conclude by quoting Writer, Karen Eloke Young, “Celebrities are humans just like you and I, they breathe the same air just like you and I, they fart and poop just like everybody else, they cry and laugh just like everybody else and they die just like everybody else!”

So Hello everyone, there’s obviously NOTHING to be obssesed about celebrities. You don’t have to hang Riri and Angelina Jolie wallpapers in your rooms. Or dress like them or talk like them… because, :-D they’re just like you and I.
