Golden Eaglets claim fifth U17 trophy
The Golden Eaglets scored two goals against Mali to see them lift the U17 World cup for a record fifth time. Mali came into the came optimistic with hopes of winning their first U-17 trophy, but their hopes were dashed by a sterling Nigerian team.
The Eaglets are only the second country to have successfully defended their title after Brazil. Osimhen and Bamgboye gave the Golden Eaglets a much needed win.
Nigeria had a chance to go ahead early in the first half from a spot kick, but Osinachi Ebere blew the chance.
It was then a tale of attacks and defence, with Eaglets keeper Akpan Udoh putting a display to prevent goals. Kelechi Nwakali, Osimhen too had their chances but goalkeeper Diarra was just too dazzling to be beaten.
The second half began and few minutes later, the Golden Eaglets got their first goal.
Record scorer Osimhen scored his tennth of the tournament to become the first player in the history of the competition to score in every games of the championship before hardworking Bamgboye doubled the lead three minutes later.
Udochukwu Anumudu smashed a thunderous effort at goal, which rebounded back off the crossbar and was cleared away.
The Malians threw men forward at the later stages of the game to force a goal, but Nigeria held firm and thwarted every attacking forays of the opponents to gloriously lift their fifth trophy.
